What do these estimates mean?
A level: the first diploma level in the HaFaBra pathway. This calculator uses a provisional benchmark of 300 total learning hours from a complete beginner.
B level: the second diploma level in the HaFaBra pathway. This calculator uses a provisional benchmark of 600 total learning hours from a complete beginner.
Important: 300 and 600 hours are working assumptions derived from a simplified HaFaBra pathway (150 total learning hours per year, two years per level). They are not official KNMO requirements, measured thresholds or guarantees of examination success. This calculator is not a validated prediction of learning speed.
Returning players start with different retained skills and should be assessed individually. Their time to recover A or B level cannot be inferred reliably from age alone.
Lessons and playing time
A teacher provides examples, diagnoses difficulties, selects material and offers feedback. Lessons do not replace the repeated playing required to develop dependable instrumental control. Enjoyable music-making can begin long before a formal examination level is reached.
How the calculation works
Calendar years = baseline target hours × age multiplier ÷ (weekly learning hours × active weeks × frequency efficiency). Annual learning hours = weekly learning hours × active weeks; this total is unaffected by the multipliers.
Age and practice frequency
The calculator opens with all adjustments active. These are hypothetical modelling choices, not measured brass-learning rates. Set the age multiplier to 1.00 and practice days to 5–7 for the hours-only calculation.
Age presets: 10, 15 and 25 years: 1.00×; 45 years: 1.10×; 65 years: 1.25×; 75 years: 1.40×. You can adjust the multiplier independently from 0.75× to 2.00×.
Practice frequency factors: 1 day: 65%; 2 days: 78%; 3 days: 88%; 4 days: 95%; 5–7 days: 100%. These factors have not been calibrated using brass-player data. Results are scenarios, not predictions.
Counting learning hours
Include lessons, purposeful home playing and actual learning time in rehearsals. Do not automatically count all rehearsal attendance as instrumental practice.
